Beginner’s Guide to the Lexus UX

The newest addition to the Lexus lineup arrives December 2018 and offers next-generation design, tech, and engineering that appeals to young buyers, and the young at heart, looking for new and exciting vehicles relevant to their lifestyle.  What will soon be the entry-model for Lexus, the new UX is far from basic and offers the same level of extraordinary attention to detail, imaginative technology, and innovative engineering seen in the redesigned LS and LC coupe.  There is quite a bit of information available already on the UX so we compiled a “beginner’s guide” to the new Lexus UX that includes our pick of top 10 features, facts, and behind-the-scenes stories for you to know about the all-new Lexus model.  Let’s explore the “Urban Explorer” before it arrives in dealerships…

Top 10 Things to Know.png

Top 10 Things to Know

  1. The UX name is derived from the design team’s guiding concept and vehicle mission: Urban + X-over (crossover) = UX
  2. First Lexus constructed on the new Global Architecture Compact (GA-C) platform that gives the UX an extremely low center of gravity (best in its class) and best-in-segment 34-ft curb-to-curb turning diameter making it easy to maneuver, park and explore busy city streets.
  3. More than just a pretty face.  The UX is the first Lexus to have full-width rear lights that are not only stunning but surprisingly functional. Unique Aero Stabilizing Blade lights begin at the top of the rear fenders and span the rear of the vehicle that contributes to the vehicle’s stability by guiding airflow around the rear of the UX.  The design also reduces turbulence and lift, providing enhanced stability when cornering and driving in crosswinds.
  4. Two new colors developed for the UX: Cadmium Orange creates a vividness and a sense of depth using a multi-layer paint process that combines a red base layer color with a yellow “interference” mica layer.  The new Nori Green has mica paint particles that have been enlarged as much as possible without creating color unevenness so to achieve high brilliance and strong contrast.
  5. The new UX Hybrid delivers 181 total system horsepower and utilizes the new-generation Lexus hybrid drive system that can go up to a 71 mph speed before shutting off the gasoline engine, such instances would include when driving on a long downward slope. Previous Lexus hybrids capped at 43 mph.
  6. Experience the engawa effect.  UX designers created a feeling of “seamless continuity” utilizing a traditional Japanese concept called engawa.  Engawa creates an effect where the upper section of the instrument panel appears to extend out beyond the windshield from outside the vehicle.  The engawa effect gives the driver an exceptional field of vision and a clear sense of the vehicle’s dimensions that allows for easy parking – even in the smallest of spaces.
  7. Noise reduction was a top priority and in typical Lexus fashion, engineers traced noises to their sources to keep them out of the cabin.  Even the sound of water being thrown by the tires is reduced.
  8. Attention to detail.  The UX headliner was designed to eliminate distracting shadows at the windshield header and even the UX control switches were given a signature “Lexus feel.”  Every inch was thoughtfully considered by the Lexus design team. White LEDs illuminate the front footwells, glovebox, and console switches.  LEDs also serve as the dome light, map lights, cargo area light and provide a unique touch with a backlit Lexus logo that displays on the Lexus Remote Touch Interface when driving at night.
  9. Versatile Multimedia.  Standard Apple CarPlay, 4GB WiFi Hotspot, Instant Replay on Sirius XM, Dynamic Voice Recognition, USB Video and RealMedia video formats, Favorite Genre for FM and Sirius XM that allow the user to select a preferred music genre to discover new stations and as a special feature for UX drivers, the music streaming service, Spotify has compiled its over one million driving-themed playlists into a CarPlay hub.  Talk about options!
  10. STANDARD SAFETY.  This may not be a surprise for current Lexus drivers, but advanced, active safety systems are standard – even on the new “entry-level” Lexus.  UX drivers can enjoy peace of mind knowing they have the latest safety technology from Lexus.  Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 includes Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection, All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and Intelligent High Beam headlamps.

Even more: the new UX comes with new tech, features, design elements and driving systems that complement an urban lifestyle.

The Next Generation Lexus ES

The 2019 Lexus ES was introduced to the world at the Beijing Motor Show and with many great pictures as well as a detailed press release from Lexus, we’re happy to report that the next generation ES will definitely turn some heads and set a new standard for entry-level and mid-size luxury sedans.  Described as “provocative elegance” by Project Chief Designer, Yasuo Kajino, the new ES will challenge the traditional expectations of buyers and current Lexus owners.

If you have some time, the Lexus Press Release really delivers detailed information on the all-new ES so we recommend checking it out.   For anyone looking for pictures and a quick, crash-course in what’s new for 2019 Lexus ES, we have that for you here.

Size Matters: the new Lexus ES

The 2019 ES is built on the all-new Global Architecture -K(GA-K) platform and will offer slightly larger proportion that promises to reflect its newfound performance capabilities.  The new ES is said to be even more spacious, quieter and safer than ever before.  The 2019 ES is 2.6-inches longer, slightly lower (0.2-inches) and 1.8-inches wider than the current model ES and will offer an impressive 2 additional inches for a longer than ever wheelbase.

Design Highlights

The 2019 ES is very similar in design to the new Lexus LS flagship sedan that was recently released, which is a very, very good thing.  This “mini-LS” doesn’t skimp on the luxury details and design elements.  The new ES looks to offer impressive new features and exciting design.

  • Dramatic New Grille Design
    • ES 350 & ES 300h use elegant vertical bars that radiate out from the center
    • ES 350 F SPORT has a blacked out pattern consisting of “L”-shaped clusters with corresponding cutouts at each corner of the front fascia.

New Tech, Enhanced Safety, and Apple Car Play

In addition to the gorgeous new design, the 2019 ES has, even more, to offer in the form of new and enhanced technology and safety features.  The 2019 ES will come with the new Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 as standard equipment.  This next generation LSS+ expands upon the advanced Safety System+ in the current models with the addition of new features including daytime bicyclist detection and better capability to detect a pedestrian at night by increasing the PCS radar’s sensitivity and range.  What else has excited about the 2019 ES?  We list our favorite new features here:

  • Apple CarPlay – iPhone users will now be able to control their iPhones through the dashboard display screen or with Siri Eyes Free voice control.
  • Amazon Alexa – enabled.  Includes car-to-home and home-to-car commands, so ES owners who have Alexa enabled devices in their home can interact with their ES before they ever get behind the wheel.
  • Onboard Wi-Fi
  • 12.3-inch Wide Dashboard Display for Navigation with cloud updates for Points of Interest

Apple CarPlay coming in 2019 Lexus ES

There’s a lot to talk about with the redesigned Lexus ES.  We look forward to sharing future posts on the revamped Lexus classic as it gets closer to arriving at North Park Lexus Dominion this Fall 2018.

2018 Lexus LS F SPORT Revealed

The new Lexus LS F SPORT model was recently revealed at the New York International Auto Show April 11th, 2017.  With many Lexus enthusiasts still salivating from the reinvented flagship debut that took place earlier this year,  -this LS F SPORT reveal is the proverbial cherry on top.

The all-new LS F SPORT promises to deliver the most engaging LS driving experience ever with handling enhancements and the latest generation of Lexus’ advanced chassis control technology, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM).  The LS 500 F SPORT will come with standard 20-inch wheels along with larger front and rear brakes which is said to “unlock more the platform’s intrinsic performance capability.”  The LS F SPORT will also come with an optional Handling Package (RWD gas models only) which gives you Lexus Dynamic Handling (Variable Gear Ratio Steering and Active Rear Steering), Active Stabilizer and sport-tuned air suspension with rapid height function.  These handling enhancements capitalizes on the new Lexus GA-L platform  – the stiffest platform ever developed by Lexus – and will no doubt respond more like a sports coupe when taking curves – like any F SPORT model really should.

What else is different from the standard LS?  While the F SPORT models are nearly identical to the standard models – with an exception to a slightly noticeable driving difference that comes from carefully applied chassis tuning.  What really makes the Lexus F SPORT models, and the LS F SPORT we are talking about today, different from their standard counterparts is the unique design.

The current Lexus F SPORT model line-up

The all-new LS 500 is already a head-turner with dramatic design language however the LS F SPORT shows an even greater commitment to it’s high-performance driving persona.   The F SPORT’s dramatic rendition of the signature spindle grille shows even greater intricacy in design and according to a recent Lexus Enthusiast article, the development of the new F SPORT grille took computer-aided design (CAD) operators five months to achieve the desired texture and interaction with light.  The F SPORT designers adjusted over 7,100 individual surfaces to achieve the right design texture for the new F SPORT grille (compared to 5,000 for the standard model’s grille).  The intricate design combined with the enlarged side grille of the new LS makes the F SPORT grille a perfect combination of form and function since it is also a key component required to maintain the LS’s cooling performance.

The special F SPORT front grille on the 2018 Lexus LS

The LS F SPORT has the iconic F SPORT badging seen on the fenders but also sports exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels that highlight the new sedan’s accentuated profile.

F SPORT badging on the new LS

The LS F SPORT interior is just as spectacular with exclusive F SPORT design elements seen throughout the cabin.  You first notice the F SPORT-exclusive front seat, which provides enhanced support for dynamic driving.  A perforated-grill pattern is seen on the seating surfaces and a unique scored aluminum trim adds to the sporty feel of the F SPORT model.

LS F SPORT seating surface

Once in the driver’s seat, you’ll see a special F SPORT steering wheel as well as a new speedometer and tachometer in a movable meter with a ring that slides to display information – a design we’ve seen before and adapted from the LFA.  The LS F SPORT continues to hold true to the F SPORT design with aluminum accelerator, brake and footrest pedals and F SPORT perforated shift handle and footrest.  Of course this is the LS, so you’ll also get Ultrasuede in the seats and headliner – a nice touch.

Check out a few more pictures of the new Lexus F SPORT below or visit the Lexus at Dominion site for additional details on the all-new 2018 Lexus LS 500 here.

2018 Lexus LS Revealed

The original Lexus LS launched the Lexus brand in 1990 and the all-new 2018 LS looks to repeat history in redefining the luxury market.  “A flagship reborn” is how Lexus described the new LS in a recent press release and from what we have seen from the pictures that are now available online, the 2018 LS is a completely new-level luxury flagship sedan in every aspect imaginable.

Recently awarded the 2017 Eyes on Design Award at the Detroit Auto Show: the 2018 LS

Lexus approached the LS redesign not as any other next-generation remodel, but from some place entirely new.  The design team re-imagined what a flagship sedan should be, as if launching the Lexus brand all over again and their incredible work has already earned an accolade!  The 2018 LS was recently awarded the 2017 Eyes on Design Award at the Detroit Auto Show and will no doubt pick up many more awards before it arrives at our dealership later this year (fingers crossed!).

So, what’s new?  Check out a few of our favorite features and design elements on the all-new 2018 Lexus LS here…

The 2018 LS will follow the Lexus LC in introducing the world to the new Lexus global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA-L).  The new platform designed for the LS provides an even longer wheelbase than before with an astounding 123-inches (this is 1.3-inches longer than the current LS long-wheelbase model!).  Longer, lower and wider – the 2018 LS has a coupe-like, low and sleek profile that still gives you the room and comfort of a long-wheelbase sedan.  The new LS is about .6-inches lower than the current LS and the hood and trunk are approximately 1.2 inches and 1.6 inches lower, respectively.  The design team took full advantage of the new low profile and will introduce a new six-side window design with flush-surface windows that smoothly integrate with the side pillar.  What’s better is that since the new LS is lower than previous model years, Lexus will, for the first time equip the LS with an available air suspension easy-access function that will automatically raise the vehicle and open the seat bolsters to welcome the lucky driver into their seat behind the wheel.

The new LS will debut an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine with twin turbo engines developed through the company’s F1 technology.  Promising to deliver V8-level power without sacrificing fuel economy, the 2018 LS achieves 418 horsepower and 442-lb-ft of torque thanks to the new Twin-Turbo V6 and first-ever 10-speed automatic transmission in a premium sedan.  Also a world’s first, the 2018 LS will feature the new Intuitive Pedestrian Detection with Active Steering.  This new safety system will automatically brake and potentially steer around a pedestrian while staying within the lane if it detects a collision is imminent.  The new color Heads Up Display will work with the system to alert the driver and offer even greater peace of mind to the driver and all occupants.

Of course the new LS offers a new stunning interior with loads of unique, high-quality materials that make our heads spin thinking of how to best describe the inspired interior design and immense attention to detail.

The new LS cabin

2018 Lexus LC: Coming Soon

Lexus Enthusiast recently shared a great, in-depth article on the 2018 Lexus LC which not only upped our excitement for the coupe’s arrival next year, but also provided a glimpse at what we can expect to see when the new Lexus LS 460 debuts next month.  With the LC poised to be the new Lexus flagship, it is interesting to learn more about the parallels of the future Lexus flagship and today’s LS 460.  One parallel is mentioned in the Lexus Enthusiast article reporting that Chief Engineer Koji Sato compared the technical difficulty of producing the Lexus LC 500 to the development of the original LS.  We’ve also recently learned that the new LS will be built on the new Lexus platform, that was first developed for the 2018 LC.  This newly developed platform is the future platform for all rear-wheel drive Lexus vehicles and was designed to provide lower overall mass, improved front/rear weight distribution and a low center of gravity.  The new Global Architecture – Luxury (GA-L) platform is no doubt the genius engineering that made the LF-LC concept design into the real-world driving Lexus LC that is coming soon to North Park Lexus at Dominion.

The Details: 2018 Lexus LC

The Lexus Enthusiast article provides loads of detailed information on the engine, drive train and performance so we wanted to dive into the details.  Anyone wanting to reserve their new Lexus LC will find the following details helpful in making that all-important color decision.

Exterior color options for the 2018 Lexus LC

The 2018 LC will debut two new colors: Structural Blue and Flare Yellow in addition to Ultra White, Obsidian, Liquid Platinum, Atomic Silver, Nebula Gray Pearl, Caviar Mica, Matador Red Mica, Infrared, Nightfall Mica and Autumn Shimmer.  Quite a few options to choose from- especially interesting to hear that they will be making the LC in both Lexus Red’s – Infrared and Matador Mica.  We will have to see if all of the color options above will actually be built and available for our market.

The Lexus LC will offer four interior colors to choose from: Mid Brown, Rioja Red, Black and the new Bespoke White – all pictured below.

Bespoke White interior for LC

Rioja Red interior for LC

Mid Brown interior for LC

Black interior for LC

Of course, the new Lexus LC will come with the latest from Lexus: revamped navigation and voice recognition software, standard Lexus Safety System+, new run-flat tires that allow for up to 100 miles at 50 mph of driving with a punctured wheel and a new “pop-up” hood.  The LC’s “pop-up” hood is designed to literally pop-up in the event of a front impact with a pedestrian using a series of pistons, in hopes of lessening personal injury.   This new safety measure further illustrates the brilliantly-thorough thought process that went into building the new LC coupe.

The hand-stitched shift knob in the LC- four strips of leather stitched together from the inside-out, hiding all seams.

The 2018 Lexus LC is stunning and incorporates new design elements that are sure to extend out to future Lexus vehicles.

Polaric Ellipsoid System lens on the Lexus LC.

In order to fit a headlight into the small overhang between the bumper and wheels, Lexus engineers had to develop an ultra-compact LED triple-projector.  The Polaric Ellipsoid System lens is half the size of a conventional LED lamp.  The next-generation Lexus DRL design is also seen on the new LC and has been reworked to eliminate grain in the light signature.

The rear tail combination lamps that are described as having an “infinite afterburner appearance” comes from a strategically placed one-way mirror with the tail light reflecting back on itself.

Interior Design

The LC interior is designed for two specific zones: a driver focused space and a welcoming passenger space.  Interior design and technology highlights pictured below.

2017 Lexus IS Updates

The anticipation for the updated 2017 Lexus IS has only grown stronger with the recent release of pictures showing off the refreshed Lexus sedan.  With the 2017 Lexus IS due to arrive at North Park Lexus at Dominion this Fall, we wanted to share some of the details on what you can expect for the stylish new model.

New NAV screen 2017 Lexus IS.png

Defy Moderation: 2017 IS

One feature that we are super excited about is the enhanced navigation and color multimedia display screen (see above).  The new, 2017 Lexus IS will come with a wide-screen, high-resolution 10.25-inch display.  Also updated for 2017 is the Remote Touch Device that helps operate the new system, giving drivers an enlarged kneed pad and slick detailing.  The 2017 IS will get a new cup holder design, new audio panel finish and an updated steering wheel switch design (complete with Lexus Safety System+ steering wheel buttons!).

2017 IS with new chateau interior and updated features

For those who refuse to follow, the new 2017 IS will offer even more ways to lead with new standard features including Lexus Safety System+ and Scout GPS Link on models without Lexus Navigation.

Updated Remote Touch in 2017 Lexus IS

The 2017 Lexus IS will be available in new exterior colors including Caviar Mica and Nightfall Mica (for non-F SPORT models only).  You will also see different interior options with Chateau replacing Stratus Gray and the addition of Nuance Black.  Nuance Black is the first two-toned interior trim that is available on non-F SPORT models and is the perfect alternative for those wanting the F SPORT style without having to pay for the F SPORT performance extras.

At first glance, the 2017 Lexus IS looks almost the same as this year’s 2016 model, but after seeing the 2017 and 2016 IS side-by-side, the updated design reveals itself…

See the difference?  If not, let us help you out…

The 2017 Lexus IS has an elongated front grille design with additional chrome detailing and does not have fog lights.  You can compare the 2017 IS and the 2016 model in the pictures above. The 2017 IS will also have new available headlamps with LED lights being standard and new or updated wheel design options.

New for 2017: Scout GPS Link

Lexus will introduce a new standard feature on select 2017 Lexus models equipped with Display Audio: Scout GPS Link.  Although Scout GPS Link is not new, and has actually been on a few Toyota models for at least a year already, it is new to Lexus and will officially launch with the arrival of the 2017 Lexus RX.  Scout GPS Link will also come on the 2017 NX, RC and IS that will arrive at Lexus Dominion this Fall.

Scout GPS Link turn-by-turn directions seamlessly integrates its Smartphone App with the Lexus Display Audio system and is a great alternative for Lexus drivers who do not choose to equip their vehicle with the available Lexus on-board navigation system.  The new Scout GPS Link should also be easier to use than a smartphone-only navigation app, since drivers will get a large, clear, full-color map with instructions right at eye level.  Once paired, the Scout GPS Link can perform destination searches with either the Display Audio controller or via Voice Command and the steering wheel mounted controls.  The new Scout GPS Link system also features traffic-based routing and the ability to resume your trip on the paired Smartphone if the vehicle is turned off before the routing ends.

You can check out additional details and how-to videos online at or click here to watch an overview from the Lexus Dominion YouTube page.

Using Scout GPS Link

The Scout GPS Link app is available for download on both the Apple App Store and on Google Play.  The process of downloading and using the Android app is slightly different from the iOS that we are going to go over so all Android users should check out for details.

SGL-AUG-007 (4).PNG

First you will need to download and install the Scout GPS Link app on your Smartphone.  Once installed, you will have to allow the app to access your location as well as allow access to your microphone in order to enable voice recognition.  The app will ask you to register an account either via email or by linking Facebook or Google+ but Lexus says this is not required.  You can skip the registration process altogether which would only mean you couldn’t access your destinations or account via another device and all destinations will clear when you turn off the car.  If you’re like me and don’t want another password to remember, this option sounds perfect.

Once you have the app downloaded, you need to pair your Smartphone to the Bluetooth system in your Lexus and install Scout GPS Link.  To do this, you will first press the “Menu” button on your Display Audio controller then select “Set Up.”

SGL-AUG-010 (3).PNG

Scroll down to “Bluetooth” and pair your Smartphone to the system.

SGL-AUG-011 (4).PNG

SGL-AUG-012 (5).PNG

Once paired, you need to download and install Scout GPS Link in your vehicle (our sales team, Delivery Specialists and Technology Specialists can do this for you at Lexus Dominion).  To download you just need to select “Now” after the system displays “A mandatory update is required.  Would you like to start updating now?” then keep the vehicle on until the download is complete.

SGL-AUG-013 (7).PNG

This app does use your phone’s data plan and the system will inform you of this once downloading is complete.  If you’re ok with that and have unlimited data then just select “Ok”.

SGL-AUG-033 (11).PNG

Scout GPS Link in your Lexus

Begin using Scout GPS Link using the Display Audio controller.  Choose “Menu” then click “Connected Navi” to begin.

SGL-AUG-015 (10)

Scout GPS Link and the Lexus Display Audio System can search for addresses and points of interests (POI) using the Display Audio controller or voice commands.  If you choose to use the rotary dial then you will click “Search” and continue to use the Display Audio controller to spell out the desired location.  The easier way to use the new system would be via Voice Command.

SGL-AUG-017 (2)

SGL-AUG-004 (3).png

If you decided to register an account with the Scout GPS Link app then you can also save/set up your Home and Work.  Once the address is set for both Home and Work, the Scout GPS Link home page will display your proximity and estimated travel time from your current location based on current traffic conditions.

SGL-AUG-009 (6).PNG

For additional information on how to use the new Scout GPS Link app, visit them online or stop by North Park Lexus at Dominion for a personal presentation on one of the 2017 models (as soon as they arrive next month).  Call us at 210-816-6000 if you would like an update/reminder from our sales team as soon as the first 2017 Lexus arrives.

We have also noticed that the Luxury Model GX460 with the Driver Assist Package will now include Mark Levinson.  The 2016 GX with Driver Assist Package was noticeably missing the premium Levinson sound system so this will make a welcome addition to the fully equipped luxury GX.
