Lexus Safety System+ has brought us closer to a world with fewer car accidents. Utilizing millimeter-wave radar and advanced camera systems, Lexus Safety System+ assists drivers in the form of pedestrian alerts, establishing preset distances from preceding vehicles, preventing lane drift, and more. The new integrated suite of active safety technologies designed to better inform drivers and prevent accidents, is standard on some of Lexus’ most popular models and will soon become standard on the rest of the Lexus model line-up. So, which models have these advanced systems? Get smart about safety with our ultimate Safety System+ Cheat Sheet.
Lexus Models with Safety System+
The 4 advanced safety systems included in the Lexus Safety System+ Package is Pre-Collision System (PCS), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert (LDA)/Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Intelligent High-Beam Headlamps. You will get these 4 safety features on the new Lexus LX 570 and RX SUVs as well as on the ES sedans, IS, GS and GS F.
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
What is this exactly? Lexus explains, the PCS with Pedestrian Detection is engineered to detect vehicles in the path of your Lexus, under certain conditions. Should the system detect a pedestrian or determine a frontal collision is imminent, it’s designed to automatically prepare Brake Assist for increased brake force, automatically begin braking before impact and, depending on the vehicle, can even brake your vehicle to a complete stop.
The Lexus Pre-Collision System consists of 3 Pre-Collision features:
- Forward Collision Warning – Vehicle warns driver when a collision is imminent
- Automatic Emergency Braking – Vehicle can automatically apply brakes with no driver involvement
- Pedestrian Detection – System can automatically apply brakes if a pedestrian is detected
** What about the Lexus models not listed above? The Lexus GX 460, NX crossover, LS sedan and RC coupes all come with an option that includes a PCS feature and although technically available (special order), we have not yet seen PCS on the CT 200h. We will break down the advanced safety features on the Lexus models that still do not come with Safety System+ below.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
What is DRCC? DRCC uses radar technology to sense the speed and distance of vehicles in front of you so to help maintain a preset following distance from the vehicle ahead. If you happen to get too close to the vehicle in front of you, DRCC can automatically reduce your speed as needed.
Lane Departure Alert (LDA) | Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
What is LDA and LKA? LDA consists of a Lane Departure Alert Function, Vehicle Sway Warning and Steering Vibration where LKA involves active Steering Assist and Lane Centering.
- Lane Departure Alert Function – Vehicle warns driver when it detects inadvertent lane departure
- Steering Vibration – Steering wheel vibrates as a notification to the driver when LDA is activated
- Vehicle Sway Warning – Vehicle warns driver when vehicle is swaying or appears as if it may depart from its lane multiple times
- Steering Assist – Vehicle can actively steer back into the lane when it detects an inadvertent lane departure
- Lane Centering – When DRCC is set, vehicle actively steers to the center of the lane to assist the driver with staying in the lane
Intelligent High-Beam Headlamps
Intelligent High-Beam Headlamps offer added illumination when the road ahead is clear and will temporarily switch to low-beam when they sense another vehicle ahead. This convenient feature helps to provide added visibility and is a feature you can set and forget.
So, what about the rest of the Lexus model line-up? Check out how to get some of these advanced safety features on the Lexus models that do not yet come with LSS+ as a standard package.
