Now available with more options than ever, the new RX has lots to offer which can make the vehicle selection process harder for both new and returning RX owners. Not sure which model or package option to get? We are here to help. Keep reading to discover which RX is the right choice for you and your family.
First: Pick the Model
First things, first. Which model? You can choose from the RX 350, RX 450h or the RX F SPORT version of either one. The RX 350 features a 295-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine with eight-speed automatic transmission and gasoline engine that requires regular unleaded fuel. The RX 450h boasts Lexus Hybrid Drive with an Atkinson-cycle V6 engine, 308 total system horsepower, All-wheel drive and 30-mpg combined rating while requiring premium unleaded fuel. Deciding between the gas and hybrid version on the RX can seem daunting, but can be made easier by asking yourself a few key questions. First, how long do you plan on keeping this vehicle and how much are you willing to spend?
How long do you plan on keeping this vehicle? Even when drivers say “they keep their vehicles until the wheels fall off”, most people trade their cars every 4-5 years. If you are like most people and like to trade every few years then you may not see any significant fuel savings that would offset the higher price tag on the hybrid.
How much are you willing to spend? The RX 350 starts around $44,949 whereas the RX450h starts around $57,903. Granted the RX450h is AWD and comes more fully equipped so if you want to compare apples to apples then the price difference between the gas and hybrid RX is closer to $3,000.
2nd: Determine Which Features You Must-Have
If you’re like most of us, then you want the most you can get. So which features are standard and which are available as individual options or packages on the RX model you decided on?
Every single 2017 RX will come standard with Lexus Safety System+ (Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Intelligent High Beam Headlamps), 8-inch color multimedia display with back up camera, advanced bluetooth with automatic phonebook download, BT audio, Scout GPS app-based navigation, Lexus Enform Remote, Enform Safety Connect, Enform Service Connect, Subscription Free Traffic and Weather updates via HD Radio, USB/iPod Connection, Sirius XM Radio and rear power door.
After reviewing these standard features, you need to ask yourself if you want more? Are you craving wood grain or climate controlled seats? Maybe the Moon Roof has become a must-have option for you or you would benefit from having the larger 12.3-inch Navigation and Multimedia display. Make a “must-have” list and see if you can get those features in how the RX is typically available for sale.
The starting package level RX350 typically lists for around $44,494 with a Posted Price (as of 3/2017) of $42,610. This starting package level RX will have all of the standard features listed above in addition to the Hands-Free Power Rear Door and Accessory Package.
You can also get the RX to include certain added options and packages that are pre-determined and built for the Southern area. Check out our quick reference info-graphic on the RX packages here:
Your other options are more in-line with the model question we asked earlier since the next RX options are technically different models altogether. These RX options include the F SPORT Package in either AWD or 2WD (front wheel drive). The RX F SPORT 2WD can come a few different ways with the more common build including all that comes on the “typical” Navigation Package Level RX , seen above, in addition to the Panoramic Roof and all of the exclusive F SPORT features.
The AWD RX F SPORT will include a few more features like the upgraded Mark Levinson Sound System and Panoramic View Monitor. See our info-graphic on the AWD RX F SPORT here:
Still not sure which package to go with? Ask yourself these key questions…
Do you want an interior color other than Black or Light Gray?
If yes, then you need to go with the Premium Package- at least- since Parchment and Noble Brown are only available on the Premium and up package level. You can still get Black or Light Gray but all of these options are only available on the PM package level or higher package level.
Do you want the new Panoramic Moon Roof?
If yes, then you need to look at either the Luxury Package or one of the F SPORT models to get this feature.
Do you absolutely want the Bamboo Wood Trim?
If yes, then you have to get the RX with a Parchment interior in the Premium Package. Bamboo Wood Trim is ONLY available on the Premium RX with Parchment leather.
